First you need to realise there are no instant shortcuts. You will need to spend a lot of time researching the best Keywords, Building websites, optimising websites and getting quality backlinks to improve your standing in Google. The income is not likely to be high from each website. If you are using AdSense as your sole income source you will need to build a lot of small websites.
Here then are the 10 most important steps.
1. Find a niche to target. This can be something you are interested in and can write about or something like a specific product or type of product. Crucially it must be a narrow niche. Something you can target with very specific keywords without excessive competition.
2 Find decent keywords. There need to have enough people searching for that keyword (traffic) to be worthwhile. You need a minimum of 1000 monthly and preferably nearer 4000 searchers with some additional keywords such as specific products within a narrow niche. The keyword must not only have sufficient traffic but also the competition must not be too strong. You need to get on the first page of Google to make a decent income and preferably in the first 5.
3. Find the right tools for your keyword research. There are free tools including Google AdWords Keywords Tool. This will give you search volumes but note that the competition column shows only the number of Pay Per Click advertisers for that keyword. What you need for AdSense is the strength of the websites you will be competing against to get on Page 1 of Google. I use paid for Tools Micro Niche Finder and recently also Market Samurai. These give you everything, keywords, traffic, strength of Website Competition, keyword bid values and other useful data.
4 Check the there are enough PPC advertisers bidding on your chosen keyword to be sure your website will get enough relevant ads. This can vary monthly so I go for a minimum of 15. I use a free tool spyfu.com.
5. Register a domain. Your main keyword phrase should be in the domain, preferably at the start and with nothing else added. It is important to get a.com or.org domain for the US market. If this is not available consider adding a word such as reviews after the keyword phrase or use hyphens.
6. Set up Webhosting. I am currently up to 9 websites and my target is about 50. Consider the long term costs. I went for a reseller account with Hostgator which in the long run will work out a lot cheaper per site for space and bandwidth.
7. Build your website. Whatever software you use, be sure to set up a template which you can use and re-use. Be sure to optimise your website using your main keyword and subsidiary keywords in the content. Do not overdo it or Google will penalise you. Up to 7% should be acceptable. Put your main keywords phrase in the Website Title which is more important than anything else. Put the Keyword Phrase in the heading of the page with H1 tags to emphasise it for the search engines.
8. Make sure most of your content is unique, original and relevant to your main keyword. Do not get taken in by sites offering instant web sites from content gathered from around the internet. If that is all your website offers it will dive in Google. If you use content from elsewhere such as private label sites make sure you substantially rewrite it so it is original.
9. Get links, get quality links. The best way is to write articles with a link to your website in the resource box at the end. Submit to a high page rank Article Directory such as EzineArticles. The article can be about your niche if you aim to get clicks on the Articles link or if you target is just the backlink for the search engines write on any popular topic. Look at other ways to get links from high quality websites. You can find by doing a search lists of high Page Rank Blogs and Forums with do-follow links. This means you can write a decent comment with a link to your website and the search engines will follow the link. Many such websites block this. Use Social Networking. Google seems to be taking more notice of Twitter posts even though they are no-follow.
10 Track your progress. AdSense channels can tell you which Websites and pages bring in the most income. Google Webmaster Tools will tell you your ranking in Google and the links to your site which are indexed. Register your sites with Google Analytics. This can give you details about your Sites visitors.
